Thibaut Courtois, the goalkeeper for Real Madrid, has disclosed that his August-sustained knee injury will prevent him from playing for Belgium in Euro 2024.
When an MRI scan revealed that the 31-year-old had torn his ACL back in the summer, he sobbed as he left the training field.
After being operated on by the Real Madrid medical staff a week later, he was informed that he would miss the entire 2023–24 season.
In a severe blow to the Belgian national team, the Madrid goalie has now revealed that the injury will also prevent him from competing in the Euros the following year.
‘Due to the injury, there will be no European championships for me anyway,’ Courtois told Belgian site Sporza.
I may be able to play another match in May, if I’m lucky. However, you can never be completely prepared for a major competition.
Domenico Tedesco, the Belgian manager, has Koen Casteels, Thomas Kaminski, Matz Sels, and Arnaud Bodart as backup goalies in Courtois’ absence.
