90 seconds ahead of schedule, South Korean students’ college admission exam results prompts a lawsuit against the government. The students want to retake the exam for 20 million won ($15,400) apiece, which is equal to the cost of a year’s worth of study. According to reports, the affected students’ entire exam experience was impacted by the error. The difficult Suneung college admission exam in the nation consists of eight hours of consecutive examinations covering a variety of subjects.

The Suneung is one of the most difficult tests in the world, and the consequences are severe.

Future relationships are also determined by it, in addition to jobs and university placements. During the annual event, various measures are implemented to aid in student concentration, including the closure of the nation’s airspace and the postponement of the stock market’s opening.

At least 39 students filed the case on Tuesday, claiming that during Korean, the first topic of the test, the bell rang earlier at a test center in Seoul.

Despite their early protests, some students claim their papers were nonetheless taken away by the supervisors. Before the following session began, the teachers caught the error and permitted the students to make up the lost time at lunch. However, they were only allowed to mark any blank columns on their sheets and could not alter any previously submitted answers.

According to Yonhap news agency, the pupils claimed they were so angry that they were unable to concentrate for the remainder of the test. There are reports that some gave up and went home.

Local media was informed by their attorney Kim Woo-suk that the education officials had not issued an apology.

Officials told public broadcaster KBS that the supervisor in charge of that particular test center misinterpreted the time.

Students have filed lawsuits before for being rung too early. A Seoul court granted 7 million won ($5,250; £4,200) in April to students who said their bell ringing roughly two minutes early gave them an unfair advantage on the 2021 Suneung exam.

Furthermore, the cost may be significantly greater abroad. A guy in China received a one-year suspended sentence in 2012 after, at a school in the province of Hunan, he rang the bell four minutes and 48 seconds early during the national college entrance exam.
