Earlier this week, reports circulated that the Federal Government of Nigeria declared free train travel across the country from December 21 to January 4. Intrigued by the news, I decided to give it a try and share my experience. Here’s a summary:
- Booking: The process of booking tickets was smooth. I created an account on their website https://nrc.gsds.ng/login, where I logged in with my details. Booking requires the BVN and phone number, and it’s possible to book for friends and family with their BVN.
- The Station: The train stations are well-maintained, and many facilities are still in good condition. However, they appear underutilized, and there’s a suggestion to possibly lease some buildings at the stations to food vendors and shopping centers.
- The Journey: The trip from Obafemi Awolowo Train Station to Ransome Kuti Station in Ebute Metta, Lagos, was enjoyable, taking only 2 hours and 30 minutes. The AC was consistently cool throughout the journey, and food is available for purchase onboard as bringing food is not allowed.
- Security: There is ample security both at the train station and on the train itself, with Nigerian Army personnel and NSCDC officials present.
- The Vibes: The atmosphere at the stations and onboard the train was pleasant. Commendations were given to the government for the free train, seen as one of the benefits of citizenship.
In conclusion, the government is encouraged to extend the train tracks to other parts of the country, ensuring that the dividends of good governance are experienced nationwide. God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
