Nigerians seeking to update their birthdate on the National Identification Number (NIN) database will now need to submit an electronic certificate from the National Population Commission (NPC) for the electronic civil registration and vital statistics system, or e-CRVS, according to a Sunday announcement from the Federal Government.
This was revealed in new date-of-birth modification instructions published by the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) via its X handle.
The Commission stated that copies of other legitimate documents, such as identification and an application letter for modification, will now be sent to the Commission’s Director General in addition to the requirement for a birthday certificate.
Remember that prior to the new guidelines, changing an individual’s age or making other changes on the NIN system only required an affidavit and payment of N15,000.
The Commission states that the new standards only allow date of birth modifications to be made once in a lifetime and exclusively at NIMC enrolment centers.
It issued a warning, stating that dates of birth and other types of changes cannot be altered by its certified agents.
The announcement by Nigerian telecommunications carriers on February 28, 2024, as the deadline for disconnecting Subscriber Identification Modules (SIMs) that are not linked to the National Identity Number, has scarcely been followed by this development.
