EFCC Takes Down Divisive Social Media Post About Former Minister Diezani

An Instagram post including a comment attributed to Diezani Allison-Madueke, the former minister of petroleum resources, detailing allegations of money laundering against her has been removed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The tweet, which a correspondent first saw, purported Diezani discussed the charges in an interview with British journalists. Subsequent investigations on Saturday, however, showed that the unsigned post had been removed from the anti-graft agency’s official Instagram account. EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale refuted the story in answer to questions over the development, highlighting that the material did not come from the anti-graft organization and was not approved by them. The EFCC is not the source of the report. Oyewale declared, “Anything that is not signed by me is not from us (the EFCC).” According to The PUNCH, Allison-Madueke, who worked for former President Goodluck Jonathan, left the nation after the EFCC accused her of money laundering. Sunday PUNCH exclusively revealed in October 2023 that Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, had requested her extradition from the United Kingdom’s Crown Prosecution Services and filed an arrest warrant. The report indicated that the request which was made on the orders of President Bola Tinubu followed a written official request by the EFCC to the office of the AGF earlier in October. The office of the AGF cited Section 2 (2) of Nigeria’s Extradition Act, CAP E25, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004, and the London Scheme of Extradition within the Commonwealth, also known as “The Scheme,” a multilateral treaty that regulates extradition between the United Kingdom and Nigeria, in support of its extradition request, according to a top source in the Federal Government. “In a letter to the AGF’s office, the EFCC established a prima facie case against Allison-Madueke, and a magistrate was then directed to issue an arrest warrant. The AGF, acting on the President’s orders, attached the Certified True Copy of the arrest warrant to the extradition request that it wrote to the UK government, according to a source.
